Open Sonic is an open-source game based on the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' universe. It introduces a different style of gameplay called cooperative play, in which it's possible to control 3 characters simultaneously. Unlike most similar games, Open Sonic provides a greater level of interaction between the player and the levels. It's more than just a jump'n'run; the user must come up with some strategy in order to get through the levels.

The Sonic engine is as accurate as is sensible. It should feel very familiar. This is nice but also gives me a challenge. Users can make whatever level shapes they can think of, and as I’m sure you can imagine the original Sonic engine would easily break if you could throw any shape or corner or tight gap Sonic’s way.

Open Sonic is available for Windows and Linux. The latest release is 0.1.4 (September 19th, 2010). Main features:

Introducing a Sonic fan-game titled Sonic vs Darkness. This game is a remake of my very first Sonic fan-game Sonic vs Darkness (2011), which began as a sprite-animated Sonic series project on YouTube. This demo features two playable characters Sonic the Hedgehog and Shadow the Hedgehog, and will include stages inspired by the ones from the original fan-game. Like the original version, the gameplay style is inspired by multiple modern Sonic games such as “Sonic Rush” and “Sonic Unleashed”. The download links are located above.
